
Best motherboards for Ryzen 9600X, 9700X, and 9950X
AMD has unveiled its Ryzen 9000 processors along with the new X870(E), B850, and B840 chipsets. Internal testing from AMD shows that the Zen 5 architecture delivers an average performance boost of 16% over Zen 4, all while reducing power consumption. The latest motherboards come equipped with USB 4 and Wi-Fi 7, enhanced overclocking features, and fully optimized support for DDR5 memory.
This article highlights the best motherboards for AMD Ryzen 5 9600X, 7 9700X, 9800X3D, 9900X, and 9950X. They’re a solid choice, especially since AMD will continue supporting the AM5 socket through 2027. Of course, the previous-generation X670(E) and B650(E) boards remain relevant as well. See the recommended motherboards for the Ryzen 5 7600X, 7 7700X, and 9 7950X. If you have an ASRock B650E Taichi or GIGABYTE B650E AORUS MASTER motherboard, no upgrade is necessary. You can safely install a Ryzen 9 9900X or 9950X. There are many similar examples—check out the FULL version of the table.
Currently, our full table includes 90 models on the X870(E) chipset, 150 on B850, and about 30 on B840. We’ve also expanded the previous lineup: 170 models on B650(E) and 30 boards on X670(E). At this point, we can’t say for sure that the X670(E) and B650(E) models have become less relevant.

Of course, the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X can be installed on a GIGABYTE B650M motherboard. The manufacturer released a BIOS update to support the new generation. The situation is similar to the Ryzen 9 7950X: the system boots, but it suffers from overheating and throttling because it only has 6 power phases and lacks a VRM heatsink.

They have a total of 14 MPS MP87670 80A power stages, but only 7 phases. This motherboard is more than enough for the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X, even with Precision Boost Overdrive.

ASUS PRIME X870-P WIFI

It also includes a USB Type-C port with up to 60W PD/QC4+ and AI-powered functions for overclocking, networking, and cooling.
MSI MPG X870E CARBON WIFI

The company’s top ATX model for this chipset. MSI has updated the design and added several EZ DIY features, including EZ M.2 Clip II and Frozr Shields II, EZ Antenna, and an EZ PCIe release button for unlocking the graphics card. It also includes a front-panel USB Type-C port with 27W PD support.
BIOSTAR X870E VALKYRIE

Compared to the X670 VALKYRIE, the new model adds full PCIe 5.0 support, more USB ports including USB 4.0, and 2 extra power phases. It does not include Wi-Fi out of the box but has a dedicated M.2 slot for a Wi-Fi adapter. Memory speeds have also increased, now reaching 8000 MHz compared to the previous 6000 MHz.
ASRock X870E Nova WIFI

In short: efficient VRM cooling keeps temperatures low even under heavy load. There are five M.2 slots, one of which supports PCIe 5.0, and two USB4 ports provide plenty of connectivity. The package includes an ASRock Wi-Fi antenna (2.4/5/6 GHz) for the integrated Wi-Fi 7.

Perfectly suited for high-speed performance and the networking demands of the latest standards. It’s also worth noting the proprietary NZXT software.
Conclusions
The flagship X870E chipset comes standard with Wi-Fi 7 and USB4 (40Gbps), compared to the X670E. The number of PCIe lanes and their configuration remain unchanged. The X870E also includes special optimizations for AI computing. And, of course, every reputable manufacturer makes sure to include “AI” in the name or description.
